SUMMARY:Orienteering at Weeks Woods
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: \n\n\nFor those of you planning to come to UNO’s Weeks Woods orienteering meet in Gilford\, NH this Saturday\, 11/19\, as well as for those of you still thinking about it… \n…Here is a preview of the information about the courses as provided by course setter Paul Regan. \nThe Courses\, Their Lengths\, and the Number of Controls: \nWhite: 1.5 km\, 6 controls \nYellow: 2.0 km\, 10 controls \nOrange: 2.9 km\, 12 controls \nBrown: 2.3 km\, 8 controls \nGreen: 3.7 km\, 11 controls \nRed: 4.4 km\, 14 controls \n  \nMap Scales: \nPaul intends to print the White & Yellow courses at 1:5000\, the Orange & Brown courses at 1:7500\, and the Green & Red courses at 1:10000. \nPreliminary Course Setter Notes: \nWater features are low\, vegetation boundaries have changed since the map was made (particularly the logged areas)\, and there are some smaller trails can be almost indistinct. The beginner (White) course is a typical trail walk. The advanced beginner (Yellow) course is more challenging than typical and is mostly off trail following stone walls. The intermediate (Orange) course aims to provide attack points or catching features. And the advanced courses (Brown\, Green & Red) aim to minimize the usefulness of trails.\n \nQuestions about the meet may be directed to Jon Nash at jonnash@juno.com. Please let Jon know if you are planning to come with a large group. \nFinally\, it would be great if there were a couple more volunteers. The weather has finally turned colder and meet administration is all outside so having more helpers will mean we can try and minimize people’s time standing in the chilly weather. Please email Jon if you can volunteer. \n\n\n\n_______________________\n \nORIENTEERING AT WEEKS WOODS on Saturday\, November 19th \nEvent Location: Weeks Woods on Route 11A (Cherry Valley Road) in Gilford\, NH \nMap: Weeks Woods and Timber Hill Farm\, 1:7500 scale\, 3 meter contour intervals \nRegister and start between 10 AM and 1 PM. Courses close at 3 PM! \nCourses: Something for everyone…Course setter Paul Regan will be setting White\, Yellow\, Orange\, Short Advanced\, Advanced courses. Electronic punching will be used. \nCost: Cost: UNO members are free. Members of other orienteering clubs pay $5. Non-members are charged $10. Small groups of family and friends may orienteer together for one entry fee. Group members may purchase additional maps for $2 each. Family maximum of $30. \nParking is across the street from the Weeks Woods trail head in the Gilford town offices complex parking lot. Exercise caution when crossing Route 11A. \nBeginners instruction will be available throughout the registration window. Loaner compasses and loaner dibblers (electronic punching devices) will also be available. \nA note for scouts and other groups: Please email Jon Nash\, the event contact\, in advance so we can send you our waiver and have your registration materials ready onsite. \nDirections: The Weeks Woods trailhead and parking area are on Rt. 11A in Gilford\, NH. There is no space to park at the trailhead\, so orienteers should park across the street at the Gilford town offices. 2.4 miles northeast of the interchange with Rt. 3/11 (the Laconia Bypass) and 0.5 miles southwest of the junction with Rt. 11B\, turn southeast into the entrance to the town office complex (Valley Road)\, and immediately turn left into a spacious lot adjacent to the DPW building. SUMMARY:CANCELLED--Sunday March 15 Ski-O in Vermont
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled! Note from organizer: Sorry to do this\, but the rain hit Sleepy Hollow pretty hard and we are going to have to cancel. Off of their 2k man made loop its about 50/50 grey ice and dirt\, so we really can’t safely pull off a race. We are planning to try to find a earlier weekend next season and hopefully that will work out! Thank you for helping us spread the word\, and thanks in advance for helping let everyone know that we’ve had to cancel.\nSleepy Hollow Ski Orienteering\nMarch 15\, 2020\n427 Ski Lodge Drive\, Huntington\, VT 05462 \nCost: $20 (Please bring cash or check) \nFind your way over to Sleepy Hollow this March for a mind-bending orienteering adventure on\nskis! Grab a map and pick your route through Sleepy Hollow’s beautiful woods. Or challenge\nyourself by racing through a maze of single-track trails designed specifically for this event!\nSki Orienteering (or Ski-O for short) is a sport where the race course isn’t marked — skiers\nmust choose the best route and navigate to a series of points using nothing but a map and\ntheir own wits. The Map has both features and all small and large trails clearly marked.\nThis event is open to all ages and abilities. There will be several courses at this event for skiers\nand navigators of all ability levels. Your entry fee allows you do do as many course as you\nwant! \nNew to Ski-O? Come by at 10AM for a free Ski-O clinic with members of the US Ski-O team. \nSchedule:\n9:30 am Registration opens\n10:00 am Free Clinic\n10:00 – 1:00 Start times (You can start whenever you want in this window)\n3:00 pm All courses close (Please check in with us before you leave!) \nWhat to bring:\nSki Orienteering is usually done on skate skis; however\, Ski-O meets are freestyle in\nthe truest sense of the word — you can use any type of skis you want! Skate skis are usually\nfaster but you can stick with classic skis if you feel more comfortable. Due to the variable\nnature of some of the trails we are using\, we are not recommending participants use their best\nrace skis. \nIn addition\, you will need some kind of map holder to keep your map with you as you ski. We\nwill have some map holders available at the event but we may not have enough for everyone. \nQuestions: contact Chris Burnham

This can be done without breaching the embargoed area.  This 1.5+ hour adventure takes you from the summit of Gunstock towards the top of Pistol – that’s over 3/4 of a mile! From there\, you’ll get aboard another set of lines\, zipping from Pistol to the Aerial Treetop Course\, another 3\,809 feet!  Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling 603-737-4388 or online through https://www.gunstock.com/summer/ziptour/. \nMountain Coaster \nRide a roller coaster set on the mountainside in two-person carts on twin\, stainless steel rails.  This can be done without breaching the embargoed areas.  The coaster takes riders uphill through the forest before gravity takes over. The downhill track has swooping turns\, banked corners\, rolling drops and 360° turns. Each cart is equipped with its own braking system.  Reservations are not required. \nScenic Chair Lift Rides \nEnjoy a leisurely 15-minute ride to the summit where you will disembark to marvel at the beautiful views of Lake Winnipesaukee\, Mount Washington and the fall foliage.  Explore hiking trails at the top of the mountain or have a picnic before riding back down.  Competitors cannot buy a one-way ticket and hike down (or up) until after they have completed both days of Older Dash.  Reservations are not required. \nHiking \nGunstock Mountain Resort sits above Lake Winnipesaukee in the middle of the Belknap Range.  A complete trail map is available for download http://belknaprangetrails.org/belknap-range-trail-map/  or can be purchased at Gunstock Mountain Resort.  Competitors cannot hike within 5 miles of the Gunstock Resort until they have completed both days of Older Dash.  But the hiking map goes well beyond the immediate area around Gunstock. \nFishing \nGunstock has a 3-acre fishing pond known as Belknap Recreation Area Pond.  It is stocked on a regular basis.  A valid New Hampshire State Fishing License is required for ages 16 and older. The NH Fish and Game web site has information on when the pond is stocked and where to purchase fishing licenses.  Gunstock’s Mountainside Outfitters Store and the Camping Center have bait available for purchase.  Fishing in the pond does not breach the embargoed area. \nMountain Biking \nEnjoy Gunstock’s 50km of single and double track trails (which we use for Ski-O in the winter).   There are all levels of difficulty\, starting with beginner terrain through our campground\, to intermediate trails around Cobble Mountain\, and advanced riding across the ridge line from the summit of Gunstock to Mount Rowe.  Maps are available.  Competitors may not use the mountain bike trails until they have completed both days of Older Dash. \n\nDirections\nThe address is 719 Cherry Valley Road\, Gilford\, NH 03249\nGPS coordinates:  N 43 32.480 W 71 21.900\n(See map at bottom of this page.) \nFrom I-93 (North of Manchester and Concord\, NH\, or South of Quebec): Take exit 20 in NH\, turning onto US Route 3 North / NH Route 11 East towards Laconia. Follow Routes 3/11 approximately 6 miles. Just past the Belknap Mall\, bear right following Routes 3/11 (Laconia-Gilford By-Pass). Take the second exit\, Route 11A in Gilford. Turn right at end of exit ramp. Follow Route 11A east approximately 6 miles to Gunstock Mountain Resort. Entrance is on the right. \nFrom I-95 (North of Boston and NH Seacoast\, or from Maine): Take exit 4 in NH onto US Route 4 West / NH Route 16 North (towards NH Lakes).  Continue on Route 16 (Spaulding Turnpike) to exit 15W. Follow NH Route 11 West towards Alton. Stay on Route 11 around Alton traffic circle and through Alton Bay. Approximately 6 miles north of Alton Bay\, turn left onto Route 11A (Cherry Valley Road). Take Route 11A west approximately 5 miles to Gunstock entrance on left. \nOn-Site Meals\nWe won’t be serving food at the Stockade Lodge\, but food will be available for purchase at the Cobble Mountain Food Court in the main lodge.  They are open from 11:00 until 16:00. \nThe Landing Zone adjacent to the food court serves adult beverages and will also be open both days. \nThe Campground Store (open at 7:30) and the Retail Store (open at 10:00) both have breakfast sandwiches and coffee for sale. \nSaturday Night Dinner\nUNO will host a pasta dinner on Saturday night at the nearby Gilford Community Church\, 19 Potter Hill Road\, Gilford\, NH.  The menu will be pasta with meat sauce and a vegetarian pasta option with plenty of vegetables\, salad\, garlic bread\, coffee\, tea\, punch\, water\, hot chocolate\, and cookies for dessert.  It will be served buffet style and they promise generous portions.  Cost is $19 over age 12\, and $5 for 12 and under.  Children under age 2 are free.  Space should be adequate\, but it is limited to 200. \nNearby Lodging\nGunstock Mountain Resort has camping available on site and that is addressed in a separate section below. \nSince this is a four-season recreation area\, so there is a variety of lodging options nearby.  The closest towns to Gunstock Mountain Resort are Gilford\, Laconia\, Alton\, and Weirs.  Other towns within a reasonable distance are Sanbornton\, Center Harbor\, Tilton\, and Meredith.  This is a popular time of year with the fall foliage\, so you may find some lodging is fully booked. \nThere is a lodging guide on the Gunstock Mountain Resort website that is fairly complete.  You can access that at https://www.gunstock.com/lodging/overview/ \nOn Site Camping\nWhile Gunstock’s campground will officially close the week before our event\, it will remain open with the password of “orienteering”.  Barring an unusually early freeze\, they expect all facilities to remain open\, including the showers and laundry.  The campground has 290 campsites on 140 acres\, but they are likely to group us into a smaller area so they can begin their winter shut-down.  You can expect tent sites and ones with water/electricity.  There are bath houses with free hot showers\, coin-operated laundry facilities\, and a camp store with ice\, fire wood\, propane\, RV supplies\, and basic food items. \nYou MUST call Gunstock directly to make camping arrangements for this event.  Be sure to tell them you are coming for the orienteering\, or they will tell you the campground is closed.  Call 603-293-4341 x508 to make your reservation.
