College Woods – May 18, 2025

An upbeat group of close to 40 people – including a van load of members of the Dartmouth College Outing Club who made the trek down from Hanover – turned out for the event on what proved to be an almost ideal day for orienteering. Intermittent clouds and a nice breeze kept down the morning heat and the only brief shower of the day took place during control pick up and meet clean up.

Thanks to the meet volunteers who made the work manageable and fun: Course setter Deb Humiston who was assisted during the week by John Henkelman and Bob Lux; Meet volunteers Steve Tall, John Henkelman, and Jim Arsenault; and Control Pick-Up volunteers Paul Regan and Ernst Linder.

Deb’s courses resulted in some close finishes that gave orienteers a lot of route choices to compare with each other after they finished. The competitive talking point of the day, though, was the fact that the first two finishers on the Red Course, William Kellogg and Xander Dalke, both members of the Dartmouth Outing Club, and who finished atop a field containing some veteran orienteers – were each orienteering for their first time ever! On the most advanced course! The US Orienteering and Ski-Orienteering teams might want to take notice.

One final note. Orienteering wasn’t the only ‘not so well known in the United States sport’ taking place on the UNH recreation fields. The meet crew and those registering to orienteer in the first half of the start window got to witness a cricket match taking place on the field adjacent to the shelter serving as the event center. The cricketers got a tea break while the orienteers had to settle for a water stop.
